Ulrich left immediately after declaring the meeting over. Shayera followed a few steps behind. Maier slapped Nate on the back as he walked past. Zarker nodded. Clarkson put his hand out to shake. “Good job,” he said before moving on. Others did the same.

Nate’s mother waited near the entrance as the afternoon’s attendees exited the room. She nodded goodbye to them, watching as they passed. A few stragglers remained behind, talking among themselves.

“You’re like him,” she said while Nate paced toward the door.

“Who?” Nate said as he stepped out of the gallery.

She pointed toward the name on the wall.

“He wasn’t as reactionary or—” She shook her head, stopping herself. “Anyway, did you know he didn’t ask to be a Councilor?”

Nate gave her a puzzled look as they walked through the lobby.

“Yeah, he just wanted to help. Eventually they figured out he’d keep trying to help whether they wanted him to or not, so they may as well bring him into their group.”

She placed her hand on his shoulder as they stepped out of the open doorway.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I really am.”

“It’s okay, Mom.” The snow was nearly blinding in the daylight. The whole city seemed to shine. “I understand.”
